PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a superconducting wire capable of achieving critical current density same as a superconducting wire having a tape-shaped cross section and provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: This superconducting wire has almost a circular cross section, is made of an aggregate formed by spirally aggregating two or three fan-shaped segments whose cross section is almost semi-circular or whose central angle is about 120 degrees at a given pitch in the length direction, and the segment consists of at least one superconducting filament spirally arranged in the opposite direction to the segment at the given pitch within the segment and a metal cover covering the superconducting filament. The superconducting wire is manufactured in such a way that at least one superconducting filament is twisted with a strand having almost a circular cross section, covered with metal at a given pitch P0, (n) pieces (n=2 or 3) of twisted strands are spirally intertwisted at the given pitch, and stranded wires are formed into a wire having a prescribed outer diameter and almost a circular cross section by diameter contraction work.
