The seal has two elements, each made of a composite material including an elastomer and a structural support material and configured to surround elements in the shaft with the elastomer when a radial pressure is applied. The packing seal includes a top plate (50), a number of fixing plates, radial reinforcement elements and an enclosing body (52) The two elements are made to fill a zone (7) around and between the elements in the shaft during application of a radial pressure. The structural material is a metal or thermoplastic. The fixing plates extend below the top plate radially around an axis parallel to the axis of the well. The body (52) encloses the fixing plates and the radial reinforcement, forming a solid structure with a bore through it. The body is an elastomer and is shaped to fill a zone around and between the elements in the shaft when a radial pressure is applied. The reinforcing elements are fixed to the fixing plates or are fixed separately to the top plate, forming a single body. The packing is fixed to or forms part of a blow-out protection unit. An Independent claim is also included for the production of the packing.
