PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically determine the states of a primary and a secondary device when a new device is connected to an old type system by allowing a device which can automatically be constituted to determine that the other device does not respond to numeric data from a computer and constitute the device itself temporarily as a primary device. SOLUTION: The device which can automatically be constituted when fitted with a jumper (102) uses constitution by the jumper, erases constitution information in a nonvolatile memory (104), and bypasses an automatic constitution process (106). When no jumper is fitted, the device which can automatically be constituted confirms whether or not the device is previously constituted with last constitution stored in the nonvolatile memory (198). When the device is previously constituted, the device asserts a signal to monitor a signal matching a standard protocol (110), determines that the other device does not respond to numerical data from the computer through the monitoring, and constitutes the device itself temporarily as a primary device.
