PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a display device which remarkably enhances light utilization efficiency by disposing a linearly polarized light semi-transmissive layer which transmits linearly polarized light in a 1st direction and reflects and transmits linearly polarized light in a 2nd direction perpendicular to the 1st direction in a prescribed ratio behind an optical element. SOLUTION: Alignment layers are separately formed on glass substrates 13, 14 in such a way that their axes of alignment meet at right angles and a nematic liquid crystal layer 15 has 90 deg. twist angle. A linearly polarized light semi-transmissive layer 18 is formed between a transparent electrode 17 and the glass substrate 14. Polarizing plates 11, 12 are separately formed on the outer surfaces of the glass substrates 13, 14 in cross nicol form and a backlight 22 is disposed on the outside of the polarizing plate 12. The linearly polarized light semi-transmissive layer 18 transmits about 100% of polarized light parallel to its axis of transmission and reflects 70% of polarized light nearly perpendicular to its axis of transmission and transmits the remaining 30%. |
