PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an endless recording of an audio signal with a fixed head and prevent a noise from being generated even when a tracking error occurs. SOLUTION: A system controller 21 repeatedly forms three recording regions along a longitudinal direction of a video tape based on a timing signal from a servo circuit 14. During a recording operation, track positions for recording and erasure in one traveling direction and a returning direction are shifted by one-third for every inversion of a tape. In a compression and expansion circuit 4, audio signals are divided into blocks while allowing some portions thereof to overlap each other, and those blocks are compressed to a quarter size to be recorded in one recording region on the tape. At the reproduction of the audio signals from the tape, the reproduced audio signals compressed in a quarter size is expanded to a length of four times, and the adjacent blocks are connected to each other in the overlapped portion. Thus, deviation caused by a tracking error is eliminated.
