Gas phase fluidized bed reactor for polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers has a vertical tubular reaction zone, cycle gas pipe, cycle gas compressor and cooler. The reaction gas passes from the pipe into the reaction zone and in the lower part of the reaction zone itself, there is no/or one gas distributor plate, in which the total area of the gas outlet orifices is over 20% of the total area of the plate, is new.
