(2R, 3S, 4R, 5R)-2-Amino-5-methylpiridine-3,4-diol and (2S, 3S, 4R, 5R)-2-N-substituted-2-amino-methylpiperidine-3,4-diols represented by general formula (I) and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, which exert a potent inhibitory effect on glycosidase. In said formula R<1> and R<2> are each hydrogen; or R<1> is hydrogen while R<2> is lower alkanoyl or omega -trihalogenated lower alkanoyl; or R<1> and R<2> together represent phthaloyl). The above compunds can be prepared from (2S, 3S, 4R)-5-N-protected-2, 3, 4-O-triprotected-5-aminopentane-1, 2, 3, 4-tetraols by multistage processes.
