The impact absorber includes a first force element (1) with an effective surface (11) which is displaced in accordance with a preset force-distance characteristic in response to an external force (Fwirk). A second force element (2) is fixed to the effective surface (11) and exerts a variable force (Fvar) upon the effective surface in accordance with a controllable force-distance characteristic. The second force element includes a differential cylinder (21) connected to a pressure system (3) for exerting a working pressure in the cylinder sections (24,25) adjoining a piston (22).
