A transformer has its at least one primary winding (3) switchable to a supply network (1) with a supply voltage (U1(t)), by closing a power switch (5). At least one secondary winding (4) can be switched to an auxiliary network (2) which has a low short- circuit capacity relative to the switchable supply network (1). The supply voltage (U1(t)) is only switched to the primary winding (4) by closing the power switch (5), when the primary voltage (Up(t)) induced into the primary winding (3) by the secondary winding (4) is at least approximately equal to the supply voltage (U1(t)).
