A lighting system, comprising an electroluminescent foil (2) and a voltage supply controller (1), is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) a process for operating the above lighting system; and (ii) an apparatus for controlling and operating an electroluminescent foil (2), especially for carrying out the above process. Preferred Features: The electroluminescent foil (2) comprises ZnS:Mn phosphor layers, a BaTiO3 dielectric between a transparent conductive ITO layer and a conductive Ag layer, between two support foils.
