A valve assembly including a spool piece (102) and a seat ring retainer (202) is disclosed. The seat ring retainer includes a portion which extends beyond the outer casing (110) a valve in which it is disposed. The spool piece includes an inner coating that protects the spool piece from the harmful effects of flashing and cavitation and tapers from an end inner diameter to a larger diameter. The spool piece is constructed such that the inner coating includes a portion having recessed edges capable of receiving a portion of a seat ring retainer that extends beyond the valve in which it is disposed.
