Purifying and recovering surfactant-containing water from industrial scale washing processes using two bioreactors containing biodegraders of different activity rate. Purification and recovery of surfactant-containing water (I) from a washing process by physically purifying it and then passing it to an (an)aerobic bioreactor (6) containing mixed material (Mischbiozonose) specifically designed for biodegrading (I) is such that the water is then (a) passed to an (an)aerobic bioreactor (9) containing a further mixed material which biodegrades (I) more slowly than in bioreactor (6) and (b) recycled to the washing process. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for the above process; this comprises a feed pipe (5), together with bioreactors (6, 9), each having a mixed material as specified above for biodegrading (I).
