The battery system has a starter battery (1) and a network supply battery (2). At least the starter battery has a starter battery heater (3) for heating the starter battery. A switching arrangement (4a) is provided for electrically connecting the starter battery to the network supply battery. The starter battery can have a further heater than can be connected to it by the switching arrangement. An Independent claim is also included for a method of operating a battery system.
