The carrier of an electrode for a primary or secondary battery consists of a foamed synthetic plastic material, the active material in finely divided form being held within the bubbles of the foam and the intercommunicating pores between the bubbles being smaller than the particles of active material. The diameter of the foam bubbles is preferably 0.1-0.5 mm. and the foamed material may be foamed polyethylene or polystyrene or material known under the Registered Trade Mark " Moltopren ". The active material can be introduced into the bubbles by immersing the carrier in a water suspension of the active material, e.g. lead dioxide, or by spraying the carrier with such a, suspension under vacuum or, if the pores are sufficiently large, by shaking with dry powdered active material. The filling may be assisted by electrophoresis. The filled carrier is then heated in a mould with movable walls to a temperature approaching the plastic range of the synthetic material and is compressed from at least two sides until the pores contract sufficiently to retain the active material. Alternatively the bubbles can be filled with a solution of a salt of the active material and the salt then reduced. Current collector can be embedded in the carrier during the porereduction stage by hot-pressing two half-plates with the collecting grid between them. Alternatively filled carriers can be forced into a collecting grid.
