摘要 When an optical impulse with any polarisation is transmitted through an optical transmission system which is optically anisotropic at least in sections, the optical impulse is generally distorted due to the different speeds for the different polarisation components. This distortion of the optical impulses reduces the maximum transmission of the system in particula r. This can be resolved with a method in which a polarisation setting device fo r setting the polarisation of the optical impulse is controlled in such a way as to maximise the transmission performance, in accordance with the determined transmission performance of the transmission system; and with an optical transmission system comprising an optical transmission medium, a device for determining the transmission performance of the transmission system, a regulating device and a polarisation setting device. The output signal of th e device for determining the transmission performance of the transmission syst em is adjacent to the regulating device which controls the polarisation setting device for modifying the polarisation of the optical impulses in such a way as to optimise the transmission performance.
