PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of forming an image with high density or a sharp image having a clear edge. SOLUTION: This image forming apparatus 1 comprises a recording medium transporting section 5 for transporting a recording medium PP having microcapsules each containing two kinds of charged particles provided on the surface thereof by nipping it from front and rear sides, an upper electrode section 2 for applying a voltage by being in direct contact with or in close proximity to the indication face, a lower electrode section 3 for applying a voltage by being in direct contact with or in close proximity to the rear face, and a control section 4 for applying the voltages modulated based on image data to each of the electrodes by being connected to the upper and lower electrodes. A distance between adjacent electrodes is greater than a distance between opposing electrodes so that interference of an electric field among electrodes can be eliminated, thereby forming an image having a clear contour.
