PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a refrigerator which has a compressor having a drive motor capable of control of its rotational speed, an outside air temperature sensor for sensing the temperature of outside air, an evaporator temperature sensor for sensing the temperature of an evaporator, a selector for selecting the operation mode, and a controller for controlling the action of the drive motor. SOLUTION: In case that the user selects a quick cooling mode through a selector 9, a controller 10 controls a drive motor 21a, taking the outside factors influencing the cooling performance into consideration. That is, the more the controller 10 increases the rotational speed of the drive motor 21a, the higher the outside air temperature sensed by an outside air temperature sensor 15 is. Moreover, the more the controller 10 increases the rotational speed of the drive motor 21a, the higher the temperature of an evaporator sensed by an evaporator temperature sensor 13 is. Accordingly, the compression capacity of a compressor 21 is varied by the temperature of the outside air and the temperature of the evaporator, and effective cooling is performed, and the overload of the compressor 21 is prevented.
