PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an appropriate layout print by an arrangement wherein a second layout means makes a decision whether layout control is performed by a first layout means or a second layout means based on the conditions of layout print and printing is effected while controlling the layout of a print data according to the decision results. SOLUTION: The number of pages N of contraction layout is inputted along with print setting of processing allocation between a device and a host computer (S1401). A decision is then made whether or not the processing allocation between the device and the host computer is automatic (S1402). Allocation between the device and the host computer is determined and printing is effected if it is automatic (S1405), otherwise contraction layout printing is effected through function only of the host computer (S1406). A decision is also made whether the processing allocation between the device and the host computer can be processed by the device (S1404), and contraction layout printing is effected through function only of the device if it is possible (S1407), otherwise contraction layout printing is effected using the device function to the maximum (S 1408).
