PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent deterioration of control accuracy when abnormal pulse signals are output accompanied with opening of a spill valve. SOLUTION: This diesel engine has a pulser which is rotated by a crankshaft and provided with a plurality of projections. The projections are arranged with rotation sensing angular intervals and cylinder determinating angular intervals different therefrom. A rotational angle sensor senses the projections and generates a pulse signal. The angular intervals are determined based on the pulse signal. The rotation sensing pulse signals are counted every cylinder determinating pulse signal. A spill valve is controlled according to the calculated rotational angle. A cracking countermeasure state where abnormal pulse signals are possibly generated due to rotational fluctuation of the crankshaft is determined (S140). When the cracking countermeasure state is determined, cylinder determination is not executed until the counted value exceeds a specified value (S110).
