PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a friction material having good fading resistance and effectively reduced in the production of a creep goo sound upon moisture absorption or upon being wetted with water by using a material containing an aramid pulp or fiber coated with a water-impermeable resin. SOLUTION: Provided is a friction material prepared by coating an aramid pulp or fiber with a water-impermeable resin such as an epoxy resin or a polyimide resin in an aramid pulp or fiber/water-impermeable resin ratio of 99/1 to 94/6 by weight. As for the composition, it is desirable that the friction material comprises 15-25 vol.% thermosetting resin binder such as a phenolic resin, 8-15 vol.% coated aramid pulp or fiber, 2-8 vol.% reinforcing fiber such as a copper fiber, 47-55 vol.% friction modifier such as alumina or silica, and 8-18 vol.% lubricant such as graphite or molybdenum disulfide. The reinforcing fibers are exemplified by heat-resistant organic fibers, ceramic fibers, glass fibers, carbon fibers, and metallic fibers.
