PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new protein which contains a specific amino acid sequence, consists of a protein functioning as a glutamate receptor subunit and is useful in the identification or the like of an agonist and antagonist for neurotransmitter glutamate. SOLUTION: This a new protein, has an amino acid sequence represented by the formula or the amino acid sequence in which one or several amino acids are substituted or deleted in this amino acid sequence or inserted into this amino acid sequence and functions as a glutamate receptor subunit, and is useful in the assay or the like designed for determining the property by identifying the agonist and antagonist for glutamate. This protein is obtained by initially extracting RNA from mammalian brains, preparing a cDNA library by using this RNA, screening out this library by the expression of an ion channel opened by a kinase in the oocyte of African clawed toad and finally expressing the resultant gene in the expression system.
