A tool bit for use in at least one of a drilling and cutting operations is formed of an axially extending carrier member and a cutting member. The cutting member has an expansion joint extending parallel to the axis of the carrier member. The expansion joint is formed by reducing the thickness of the cutting member so that material webs remain. In the fabrication and formation of the tool bit, the cutting member is a single unit. In the use of the tool bit, due to the expansion joint the cutting member forms individual operating units affording reduced material expense of the cutting member, because of reduced stresses. |
