A heat exchanger comprises stacks of sheets separating the two separate duct systems; the ducts contain inserts which serve both for supporting the heat exchange plates and also for causing turbulence in the flow. These inserts, in >=1 of the duct systems are constituted of rows of twisted or plaited spiral wires. The spirals may be arranged in rows extending in two mutually perpendicular directions, the intervals being not greater than the internal dias. of the turns. Alternatively, in >=1 of the directions, the distances between the rows exceeds the internal dia. of the turns. Adequate stiffness, improved turbulence and relatively low pressure drop are obtd. A relatively small amt. of material is required.
