PURPOSE: An apparatus for recording/reproducing image having a serial number recording function is provided to have an effect that a user can easily search a desired scene in editing and can be easily informed of a content recorded in a tape by recording a serial number succeeded according to an initial picture unit of a discontinuous image signal. CONSTITUTION: A camera unit(100) photographs an image and generates a video signal. A key input unit(102) includes a first key(102a) for overlapping a serial number on a video screen and applying a serial number recording command and a second key(102b) for applying a video signal storing command for a background screen to store a video signal for a background screen of an OSD signal in a video memory(112). An OSD signal generator(104) generates an OSD signal for a serial number according to a control signal of a microcomputer(110). A recording unit(108) overlaps a video signal outputted from a video signal processing unit(106) and the OSD signal outputted from the OSD signal generator(104) and records it in a recording medium. A video memory(112) stores a video to be a background screen of the OSD signal. A switching unit(114) stores the video signal outputted from the camera unit(100) in the video memory(112) or selectively outputs the video signal stored in the video memory(112) and the video signal outputted from the camera unit(100) according to the control signal depending on a mode of the microcomputer(110). When the serial number recording command is applied through the key input unit(102), the microcomputer(110) counts the number that the serial number recording command is applied and controls the OSD signal generator(104) to generate an OSD signal for the corresponding serial number.
