PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a low-cost organic EL element having a superior electron injection efficiency, allowing improvement of a luminous efficiency, and having a low operation voltage. SOLUTION: This organic EL element comprises a hole injection electrode 2; an electron injection electrode 6; one or more kinds of organic layers formed between the electrodes 2, 6, including at least one luminescent layer 4 having a luminescent function; and a high-resistance inorganic electron injection layer 5 between the luminescent layer 4 and the electron injection electrode 6. The high-resistance inorganic electron injection layer 5 contains one or more oxides having band gaps of 4 eV or less selected from among an alkaline metal element, an alkaline-earth metal element and an element in the lanthanoid series as a first component, and one or more kinds of elements selected from among Ru, V, Zn, Sm and In, as a second component. The high-resistance inorganic electron injection layer 5 has conduction paths for blocking holes and transporting electrons.
