PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid the loss of a shutter chance due to battery expiration by saving power consumption, to permit application of a small-sized multi-purpose battery and to increase the number of photographing frames. SOLUTION: A microcomputer 26 detects the remaining capacity of a battery 28 in use, and a microcomputer 14 detects the remaining capacity of a recording medium 17 that records pictures and the brightness level of the surrounding. Furthermore, the microcomputer 26 sequentially stops the less required operation from the photographing functions of the image pickup device on the basis of information of the remaining capacity of the battery 28, the residual capacity of the recording medium 17 and the surrounding brightness.
