A timed release medicament is produced by forming gel granules of a water-insoluble metal soap having particles of a therapeutic agent 50 embedded or enmeshed therein as to provide a predetermined release pattern. Three ways of producing these granules are specified: (1) The therapeutic agent and metal soap are gelled in an organic solvent and the greater part of the solvent evaporated from the gel which is then broken up into small pieces and the remaining solvent evaporated. (2) A solvent gel of the metal soap is prepared and the therapeutic agent added thereto after gel formation, the whole being subsequently kneaded to prepare a dough-like product which is screened and dried. (3) A gel is prepared as in (2) and dried and screened. Therapeutic agent in particulate form is intimately mixed and the mixture then compressed into tablets. A highly water-soluble substance, such as lactose, may be incorporated in the gel. The gel may also be produced by compression. A surface-active agent (many specified) may be incorporated to increase the rate of release of therapeutic agent. Many therapeutic agents, metal soaps and organic solvents are specified.
|
