PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sensing apparatus enabling the cost, power consumption power and the size to be all reduced by making one linear polarized light source usable and using usual single-mode optical fibers as transmission lines. SOLUTION: A light source 46 emits light which is then transmitted over an input single-mode optical fiber 10 to a polarization separator 13 for separating it into two orthogonal polarized light components, an optical modulator 11 modulates the polarized light components according to an a-c voltage induced across an antenna 15 to generate two modulated lights, the polarization separator 13 combines the modulated lights into a combined light and an optical detector 47 generates an apparatus output according to the combined light.
