PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve visibility of black on a black screen display and to improve contrast, by simultaneously performing a final hold operation in a hold period of one sub field and initializing operation in an initialization period of a subsequent sub field. SOLUTION: The final of a hold period of a first sub field is overlapped on the first half of an initialization period of a second sub field. In this overlapped period, a positive pulse voltage Vr (V) is impressed on all scan electrodes SCN1-SCNN, and positive pulse voltage of Vr-Vm (V) is impressed on all hold electrodes SUS1-SUSN. Then, in the latter half of the initialization period of the second sub field, positive voltage Vh (V) is impressed on all hold electrodes SUS1-SUSN, and lamp voltage that gradually drops from voltage Vq (V) to 0 (V) is impressed on all scan electrodes SCN1-SCNN.
