PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To arbitrarily determine the position and size of a displaying image so as to provide a screen display easy to retrieve, considering man-machine interface, when displaying a plurality of reduced image data for retrieval on a monitor as image retrieval. SOLUTION: In a read address generator for a monitor output for image retrieval, a reduction ratio is determined by display start and end points of a display image, which is represented as a fraction and used as a parameter of the address generator. A circuit is formed using this parameter and generating a read address into a two-stage configuration of cumulative adders 22 and 23 and counters 18 and 19.
