VARIABLE LENGTH CODE WORD DECODER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain decoding rates of at least two coefficients per clock cycle by connecting a barrel shifter circuit to a code word source and supplying the next undecoded variable length code word to the lower side bit of the output terminal of a barrel shifter. SOLUTION: A variable length decoder 100 receives a list of variable length code words from a code word source 10. A barrel shifter circuit 20 parallelly receives many bits. The circuit 20 holds a 1st variable length code word to be next decoded on one side of an output terminal of the circuit 20 all the time and operates so as to hold the 2nd variable length code word at a place adjoining the 1st variable length code word in the output terminal of the circuit 20 all the time. The 1st code word on the end side of the circuit 20 is recognized by a lookup table 30 for length and a lookup table 40 for value and decoded.
