PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine whether or not the original is a black and white original or a color original, and to sharply shorten a copying time. SOLUTION: A deciding operation for deciding whether or not an original is monochromatic or color is started (S3), before the scanning of the whole face of the original by prescan is ended, and when decision is made before the scanning of the whole face of the original is ended, a first mirror unit is returned to a scanning start position for preparing for the reading of the original (S4), and the monochromatic reading and color reading is selectively executed, based on the decided result (S5 and S6).
