PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent liquid crystal elements from decreasing in contrast by preventing an optical memory by irradiation with light from remaining at the time of rewriting the following information, and preventing the liquid crystal from being reversed in unirradiated part by write pulses. SOLUTION: Irradiation of a photoconductive layer 7 with light is controlled by a voltage controlled high-speed shutter 13, and a waveform generating device 15 is made to operate via a control means 16 at or after irradiation of light by this shutter 13. In such a manner, the waveform generating device 15 impresses a deletion pulse for erasing a write pulse and write information and also impress a bipolar pulse with a first polarity and a second polarity between the erase pulse and the write pulse, and thereby erases remaining of an optical memory by irradiation with reading light and also prevent liquid crystal 9 from being reversed by the write pulse also in the unirradiated part.
