PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for formatting an optical recording medium whereby information on position of an auxiliary spare area registered in a DMA(defect management area) is reset at the time of formatting the medium. SOLUTION: In the optical recording medium, an auxiliary spare area is allocated when it is necessary and information on a position of the allocated auxiliary spare area is recorded to a specific area of the medium. In formatting the optical recording medium, the position information of the auxiliary spare area recorded to the specific area is reset and, judgment on the auxiliary spare area is agreed after the formatting between a file system and a driver. Accordingly, system control is not disturbed and a compatibility is maintained even when the medium is moved to another driver.
