PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control tape slip accurately by detecting the tape slip based on the comparison of the residual quantity of tape or the reel ratio at an arbitrary moment of time and the residual quantity of the tape or the reel ratio when a specified time has elapsed after the arbitrary tame. SOLUTION: Assuming (a) is a normal reel ratio, a1' is a reel ratio upon occurrence of tape slip, t1.t2.t3.t4 are calculating points of reel ratio being calculated as required at some moment of time, r1 is a reel ratio at t1, t' is a predetermined arbitrary time interval, re is a maximum reel ratio which is not judged erroneously at t', c is the difference between r1 and re, and rt is a reel ratio at the first reading point after t', following relationship must be satisfied in order to make an errorless decision of tape slip at the first reading point after t'; rt<r1+c. A slight tape slip can be detected by making the decision repeatedly during FF and REW operations.
