摘要 <p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal device having memory property and to realize a low consumption of electric power by forming an aligning means which can align liquid crystal molecules in at least two directions on one of a pair of substrates. SOLUTION: Two electrode pairs 110, 120 are formed on a lower substrate 100b. The electrode pair 110 consists of electrodes 110a, 110b facing each other, and the electrode pair 120 consists of electrodes 120a, 120b facing each other. The electrodes are formed in such a manner that the direction of the electric field produced by the electrode pair 110 and the direction of the electric field by the electrode pair 120 are perpendicular to each other. An alignment film subjected to alignment treatment in two directions A2, A3 is formed on the surface in the liquid crystal layer side of the lower substrate 100b, while an alignment film subjected to alignment treatment in the direction A1 different from the alignment directions A2, A3 is formed on the upper substrate 100a. By this constitution, the device has memory property, and the electric field is generated by applying voltage only when the liquid crystal state is to be varied, so that the consumption of electric power can be decreased.</p>
