PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic resistance effect film where a large exchange connection magnetic field and a magnetic resistance change rate are obtained even if only one base layer exists and to provide a magnetic head using the film in the magnetic resistance effect film where an anti-ferromagnetic layer and ferromagnetic layer are stacked and formed in order from a substrate-side through a base layer. SOLUTION: The film thickness of a base layer is set to be 7 nm-12 nm in a magnetic resistance effect film where the base layer of face-centered cube, a first anti-ferromagnetic layer formed of alloy containing Mn, a first ferromagnetic layer, a first non-magnetic layer and a second ferromagnetic layer are stacked on a substrate in order. It is preferable that the film thickness of the first anti-ferromagnetic layer formed of alloy containing Mn is 8 nm-19 nm. A second non-magnetic layer, a third ferromagnetic layer and a second anti- ferromagnetic layer can be stacked on the second ferromagnetic layer in order. The magnetic head uses the magnetic resistance effect film with such constitution.
