SOLUTION: In a perpendicular magnetic recording medium 10 with a base soft magnetic film 13 and a perpendicularly magnetized film 14, an NiAl film (crystal orientation and grain diameter controlling layer 12) containing 20-80 at.% Ni is interposed between the substrate 11 and the base soft magnetic film 13. An NiAl alloy film of (NiaAl1-a)100-b-c-d-eTibMocVdWe (at.%) (0.20<=a<=0.80, 0<=b<=40, 0<=c<=40, 0<=d<=40, 0<=a<=40 and 0.1<=b+c+d+e<=40) may be formed in place of the NiAl film. The soft magnetic film 13 is preferably an FeSiAl film, an Fe film, an FeNi film or an FeCo film and may be a film obtained by adding 0.1-30 at.% one or more elements selected from Ti, Zr, Nb, Hf, Ta and Y to FeSiAl, Fe, FeNi or FeCo.
