PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mail address recognition device by which even when an address is written on a sender area in ordinary layout information, the address area can be detected with high precision. SOLUTION: This mail address recognition device 10 is provided with a picture input part 12 for taking in image data of a mail 11, a picture memory 13 for storing the image data taken in the picture input part 12, and picture processing part 14 for detecting the address area to the image data stored in the picture memory 13 to obtain the address based on letters in the detected address area. The detection of the address area is performed based on the characteristics of a letter line in the area (presence or absence of honorable titles at the end of the letter line, and color, concentration or difference in size of printing of the letter line). In this way, the detection precision of the address area is improved to improve the recognition rate of the address letter line.
