PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a partially allyl-etherified resin which is useful as a curing agent for an epoxy resin and gives a cured epoxy resin item having a high glass transition point by reacting a phenol compound, a xylylene compound, and an aromatic aldehyde or ketone and coverting a specified amount of the phenolic hydroxyl groups of the resultant phenolic polymer to allyl ether groups. SOLUTION: 10-60% Phenolic hydroxyl groups of a phenolic polymer prepared by reacting a phenol compound, a xylylene compound of formula I, and an aromatic aldehyde or ketone of formula II are reacted, e.g. with an allyl halide to be converted into allyl ether groups. In the formulas, R1 is a halogen, OH, or a 1-4C alkoxy; R2 is H or a 1-4C alkyl; and R3 and R4 are each R2 or a halogen. A resin obtained by reacting the phenol compound, the xylylene compound of formula I, and the aromatic aldehyde or ketone of formula II and subjecting the resultant phenolic polymer to nuclear substitution with 0.1-2 allyl; groups per phenol nucleus exhibits the same characteristics as those of the above resin.
