PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a whitening cosmetic which has an excellent effect for improving spots and freckles and can retain the stability of a tatary buckwheat extract against heat and light for a long period. SOLUTION: This whitening cosmetic contains the extract of tatary buckwheat and a chelating agent and/or an antioxidant. The pH of the whitening cosmetic is preferably 2 to 6. The chelating agent is preferably at least one compound selected from the group consisting of edetic acid, disodium edetate, disodiumpotassium edetate, tartaric acid, gluconic acid and phytic acid. The antioxidant is preferably vitamin E and/or dibutylhydroxytoluene.
