PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To narrow the flat area of a hoistway and improve the maintenance property by partially protruding a hoist onto a car passage, and forming a recessed part on the car upper part in order to avoid the hoist protruding part. SOLUTION: A rope 11 is wound on a car 2 and a balancing weight 4 through pulleys 9, 10 respectively. The end 12 of the rope 11 is fixed to a rope end 13 fixed to the upper part of a hoistway 1. The other end 16 of the rope 11 is wound on the hoist 14 and fixed to the other rope end 15 fixed to the upper part of the hoistway 1. The car 2 is raised and lowered through the drive of the hoist 14 consisting of a disc-like rotor. The hoist 14 is protruded onto the passage of the car 2, and a recessed part 17 is provided on the upper part of the car 2 in order to avoid the protruding part.
