PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing tetrahydrofuran for a long period stably in a high yield by reacting a fatty acid ester of 1,4-butanediol with water in the presence of a catalyst. SOLUTION: This method comprises reacting a fatty acid ester of 1,4- butanediol with water in the presence of a catalyst, wherein zeolite is used as the catalyst in which the channel structure which constitutes pores and consists of rings which are formed with oxygen and other element(s) is a three- dimensional channel system, wherein the openings of at least one of three axes of the channel structure of the zeolite consist of ten-membered oxygen rings or more, and the openings of at least two of three axes of the channel structure of the zeolite consist of ten-membered oxygen rings or more, or the openings of all three axes of the channel structure of the zeolite consist of ten-membered oxygen rings or more.
