PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for efficiently separating (S)-3-methyl-2- phenylbutylamine in high yield and optical purity from racemic 3-methyl-2- phenylbutylamine or the compound having low optical purity. SOLUTION: The optical resolution process comprises (A) the selective precipitation of a diastereomer salt of (S)-3-methyl-2-phenylbutylamine and (S)-2-(4- isobutylphenyl)propionic acid from a mixture of 3-methyl-2-phenylbutylamine, (S)-2-(4-isobutylphenyl)propionic acid and a solvent and (B) the separation of (S)-3-methyl-2-phenylbutylamine from the diastereomer salt of (S)-3-methyl-2- phenylbutylamine and (S)-2-(4-isobutylphenyl)propionic acid.
