PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for separating and cutting vines, capable of excellently performing the removal treatment in a machine for treating sweet potato vines, capable of carrying out the removal treatment only of the sweet potato vines while leaving the corm parts in the earth even if the sweet potato is planted so that the sweet potato vines to be removed may twist about each other. SOLUTION: Cutting tools 12 installed in the rear parts of tools 11 for separating sweet potato vines at the front ends of right and left traveling frames are installed in the positions regulated so that fixed blades 12a may be positioned in the treating area sides between the right and left traveling frames and movable blades 12b may positioned in the outsides of the fixed blades 12a to prevent the sweet potato vines moving in the rear direction in the treating areas from coiling around cutting tool parts. The fixed blade 12a sides are covered with fixed covers 14, and movable covers 15 capable of moving in the front and rear direction are installed in the movable blade 12b sides so that when the moving covers 15 move forward, the cutting action parts of the cutting tools 12 are capped. When the movable covers 12b are moved rearward, the cutting action parts of the cutting tools 12 are exposed to form cutting action postures. Each front side part of the fixed covers 14 and the movable covers 15 is formed on the inclined guide surfaces projecting in an aslant rear direction to allow the rear movement of the sweet potato vines to be performed smoothly. A gauge wheel having a size within the sum total of lateral widths of the fixed cover 14 and the movable cover 15 is disposed in the part just behind the cutting tools 12 to support the cutting tools firmly.
