PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful for a medicine, an agrochemical a dye, an additive for photography and their synthetic intermediate by reacting a specific benzoic acid with a specified ester in the presence of a copper salt, a base and a metal halide in an amide-based solvent. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I (Y1 to Y3 are each H, an alkyl or the like; X is a halogen; M is H or a counterion) is reacted with a compound of formula II (R1 and R2 are each a substituent group) in the presence of a copper salt (preferably a copper halide, especially preferably copper bromide), a base (preferably sodium methoxide) and a metal halide (preferably an iodide, especially preferably KI) in an amide-based solvent (preferably dimethylformamide) to give the objective compound of formula III. Preferably the compound is further hydrolyzed to give a compound of formula IV. |
