PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet material conveying device and an image reading device capable of collectively processing a plurality of documents having a smaller size than that of a sheet material processed at a sheet material processing part as a substance having the size of the sheet material. SOLUTION: A sheet material conveying device is provided with a conveying roller 3; a separating/feeding means having a separation roller 1 with a slower speed than that of the conveying roller 3; a driving force transmitting means for transmitting a rotation driving force of the conveying roller 3 to the separation roller 1 and once stopping the separation roller 1 to provide a space between a sheet material and a sheet material subsequently fed; and a sheet material detecting means 7 for detecting a plurality of sheet materials conveyed while leaving with a predetermined space or more. A space between the sheet materials provided by the driving force transmitting means at the time of feeding the sheet materials having a predetermined length or less in a conveying direction is set to a smaller space than the predetermined space which the sheet material detecting means 7 can detect as a plurality of sheets.
