PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shift lock releasing mechanism for a transmission operating device for an automobile without the risk of wrong operation or influence on the layout in the vicinity of an instrument panel, provided in a simple structure with an easy mounting operation. SOLUTION: A shift lever 6 is mounted rotatably on the front surface of a transmission operating device main body 18. A shift lock releasing arm 42 projects from the side surface of the transmission operating device main body 18. A manual shift lock releasing unit for operating the shift lock releasing arm 42 is mounted on the side surface of the transmission operating device main body 18. The manual shift lock releasing unit formed independently from the transmission operating device main body 18 in a structure detachable with respect thereto can be mounted by screwing with no need of accurate positioning.
