PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make miniaturization and simplification by selecting desired ones only for the movement of moving rows and effecting the continuous arrangement thereof in marking materials disposed in a compact arrangement and close contact state laterally longitudinally. SOLUTION: A plurality of moving rows 2, 2a... having a plurality of marking materials 1aa-1zz in the longitudinal direction (a plurality of steps) are arranged adjacently laterally, and the moving rows 2, 2a... are arranged movably in the longitudinal direction, and further the moving rows 2, 2a is moved in the longitudinal direction so that the desired marking materials 1aa-1zz are arranged in a row at specified lateral rows (selection marking lateral rows XL), thereby arranging the marking materials 1aa-1zz in a compact arrangement and a close contact state laterally longitudinally. The character marking parts of the marking materials 1aa-1zz arranged in a row are brought in contact with the surface of an article, and a compression marking effect is carried out with respect to head parts to be compressed of the marking materials 1aa-1zz by the rotation movement of a roller to be in compression contact with the head part to be compressed, thus allowing them to be effected continuously successively on the adjacent marking materials 1aa-1zz with compression force equal to one piece of marking materials so as to mark desired indication.
