PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rack-and-pinion type steering device capable of supporting a die forged rack stably preventing occurrence of distortion in the rack, and reducing a manufacturing cost. SOLUTION: A rack 4 has a tooth 4a which meshes with a pinion turned by a steering operation. A rack support member held in a housing that covers the rack 4 is pushed to a backside of the rack 4 along a cylinder face by an elastic force exerted by an elastic member. The rack 4 is formed by die forging, has a larger diameter part 51 and a smaller diameter part 52 that are axially parallel, is supported by a rack support member at the smaller diameter part 52, and has the tooth 4a formed in the smaller diameter part 52. A diameter of a circle circumscribed on the smaller diameter part 52 is made smaller than a diameter of a circle circumscribed on the larger diameter part 51.
